This walk follows the route up through the bamboo and Hagenia forest to the Karisoke research site, where Dian Fossey studied the Virunga gorillas and where she is buried beside her favourite animals.
It is a long, steep day at altitude and a reasonable level of fitness is needed. Guides set a steady pace, and there is time to rest at the site before descending.
Kigali to the foothills
Travel north to Musanze and spend the afternoon at the twin lakes, resting ahead of the walk.
