Akagera National Park Safari Guide: Big Five, Lakes and Savannah

Plan an Akagera National Park safari with game drives, Lake Ihema boat trips, wildlife tips and an ideal two-day schedule.

Green savannah landscape in Akagera National Park, Rwanda

Akagera National Park brings a classic savannah safari to Rwanda. Rolling grasslands, woodland and a chain of wetlands support elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and an exceptional variety of birds, alongside reintroduced lions and rhinos.

Why Akagera feels different

The park’s landscape changes continuously from open plains to papyrus-fringed lakes. This variety rewards unhurried exploration. A private vehicle allows time to watch behaviour rather than racing between sightings.

Game drives and Lake Ihema

Early morning and late afternoon drives offer cooler temperatures and active wildlife. A guided boat trip on Lake Ihema adds a completely different perspective, with hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and animals approaching the shore.

One day or two days?

A day trip from Kigali is possible, but it creates a long day and limits the park’s quieter hours. One night near or inside Akagera allows an evening drive, an early start and time for both northern plains and southern wetlands.

A responsible safari

Stay on authorised tracks, keep a respectful distance and never pressure a guide to approach wildlife too closely. Quiet observation produces better photographs and protects animals from unnecessary stress.

Planning tips

  • Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens rather than relying on close approaches.
  • Wear neutral, breathable clothing and carry sun protection.
  • Confirm current park fees and activities before travel because rates can change.
