Rwanda is a rewarding year-round destination. Its high elevation keeps temperatures comfortable, while two drier periods and two greener periods shape trail conditions, wildlife viewing and the feel of each journey.
Rwanda’s travel seasons
The longer dry period usually runs from June to September, with another drier window from December to February. Rain is more frequent from March to May and again around October and November. Mountain weather remains changeable in every month, so a waterproof layer is always useful.
Gorillas, chimpanzees and wildlife
Gorilla permits operate throughout the year. Drier paths can make trekking more comfortable, while green-season forests are lush and atmospheric. In Akagera, wildlife viewing is excellent year-round; the drier months can concentrate animals near water. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe starts early and should be planned with good footwear in any season.

When to choose the green season
Travellers who value vivid scenery, quieter routes and a slower pace may enjoy the wetter months. Rain often arrives in showers rather than occupying the whole day. A flexible private itinerary makes it easier to respond to local conditions.
Book around your priorities
June to September and festive-season dates should be reserved early, especially when gorilla trekking is central to the trip. The best month is ultimately the one that aligns with your interests, budget and tolerance for rain.
Planning tips
- Reserve gorilla and chimpanzee permits before confirming non-refundable flights.
- Pack layers, sun protection and a light waterproof shell in every season.
- Allow at least one flexible afternoon in a multi-park itinerary.
